Furniture sizes: US, UK and EU.
Beds come in national standard sizes that share names but not measurements. Sofas, tables and wardrobes have no standard at all, only typical ranges. Here are both, in inches and centimetres.
The short answer
Beds are the one piece with national standard sizes, and they differ: a UK king is 150 × 200 cm, a European king 160 × 200 cm, a US king 193 × 203 cm. Sofas, dining tables and wardrobes have no standard; makers sell them in typical ranges, in inches in the US and centimetres in the UK and Europe. The furniture is the same size either way: only the units change. 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly.

Sofas
There is no standard sofa size. These are the ranges a large retailer gives (Castlery, which lists both units); any maker can fall outside them.
| Sofa | Length | In inches |
|---|---|---|
| Loveseat / 2-seater | 140–180 cm | 55–71 in |
| 3-seater | 180–230 cm | 71–90 in |
| 3-seater, extended | 220–240 cm | 87–94 in |
| 4-seater, modular or sectional | 230–300 cm | 90–118 in |
Depth 80–100 cm (31–39 in), 85–95 cm (33–37 in) for most; height 75–90 cm (30–35 in); each arm takes 10–20 cm (4–8 in) of the length (Castlery).
Dining tables
Seats are counted at 24 in (610 mm) of table edge per diner, the minimum the NKBA plans for. Along the two long sides that is computed below; a table at least 24 in (61 cm) wide also takes one diner at each end. Standard height: 28–30 in (71–76 cm).
| Length | Same in | Seats on the sides | With both ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 in | 122 cm | 4 | 6 |
| 60 in | 152 cm | 4 | 6 |
| 72 in | 183 cm | 6 | 8 |
| 84 in | 213 cm | 6 | 8 |
| 96 in | 244 cm | 8 | 10 |
| 120 cm | 47 in | 2 | 4 |
| 140 cm | 55 in | 4 | 6 |
| 160 cm | 63 in | 4 | 6 |
| 180 cm | 71 in | 4 | 6 |
| 200 cm | 79 in | 6 | 8 |
| 240 cm | 94 in | 6 | 8 |
The lengths in centimetres are round numbers chosen for the calculation, not a European standard. A rule of thumb that leaves more room, from Living Spaces: tables of 60 in (152 cm) and under seat up to four, 80 in (203 cm) and under up to six, 90 in (229 cm) and over eight or more.
Wardrobes and closets
UK: free-standing wardrobes, from Spaceslide’s guide (built-in ones are typically 60 cm deep):
| Wardrobe | Width | Height | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 50–90 cm 20–35 in | 180–200 cm 71–79 in | 50–60 cm 20–24 in |
| Double | 90–160 cm 35–63 in | 180–220 cm 71–87 in | 55–65 cm 22–26 in |
| Triple | 150–250 cm 59–98 in | 190–240 cm 75–94 in | 55–65 cm 22–26 in |
Europe, flat-pack example: the three IKEA PAX frames we checked are 50 × 58 × 201, 75 × 58 × 236 and 100 × 58 × 236 cm (width × depth × height; 20, 30 or 39 in wide, 23 in deep, 79 or 93 in high). Standing a 201 cm frame up during assembly needs a ceiling of 202 cm, a 236 cm frame 237 cm; with sliding doors, 205 and 240 cm.
US: clothes usually go in a built-in reach-in closet rather than a wardrobe. Dimensions.com gives 24 in (61 cm) as a comfortable depth and 20 in (51 cm) as the least.
Worked example: the flat on our home page
Beds. Queen bed: 160 × 200 cm. Exactly a European king (160 × 200 cm). King bed: 180 × 210 cm. No standard size; the nearest is the US California King at 183 × 213 cm, 6 cm off in total.
Dining table. 1.60 m (63 in) × 0.95 m (37 in): 63 in long, so 4 along the sides at 24 in each, 6 with the ends (it is 37 in wide).
Sofa. 240 cm (94 in): inside Castlery’s “3-seater, extended” and “4-seater, modular or sectional” ranges.
Closet run. 228 × 60 cm (90 × 24 in): deep enough for 58 cm PAX frames, 1 cm short of a 24 in US closet, above the 20 in minimum. Its 228 cm width takes 3 × 75 cm PAX frames (225 cm), leaving 3 cm.
Check it at real size
A size table tells you what a piece measures; it does not tell you whether there is room to walk around it. Floor Plan to Home puts the piece in your recreated home at its real size. See also the bed size guide, the sofa size guide and the dining table guide.
Furniture sizes, answered.
Is a UK king the same as a US king?
No. A US king is 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm); a UK king is 150 × 200 cm, 43 cm narrower. The nearest UK size is the super king, 180 × 200 cm.
Is a European king a US queen?
Close, not equal. A European king is 160 × 200 cm; a US queen is 60 × 80 in, 152 × 203 cm: 8 cm narrower and 3 cm longer.
Is there a standard sofa size?
No. Makers sell a three-seater anywhere from about 180 to 230 cm (71–90 in) long, so measure the one you want rather than the category.
How deep is a wardrobe?
About 60 cm (24 in). Spaceslide gives 50–65 cm for UK free-standing wardrobes and 60 cm for built-in ones, IKEA’s PAX frames are 58 cm, and a US reach-in closet is planned 24 in deep, 20 in at the least (Dimensions.com).
